The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien is a classic fantasy novel that is split into three books, a trilogy.  If you have not read them, we urge you to.  The following board game and rules are based solely on the books and not the films.  Please feel free to download and try them.

Battle of the Ring Board Game

First published in the Wargamer Magazine 1977 this revised game has been graciously authorised for republication by its creator Martin Edwardes.  The graphics have been slightly updated on the game board and counters, but the rules remain true to their creator.

The game is played either with two players: Good and Evil or three players: Sauron, Saruman and the Good Alliance.

Like the book, the objective of the game is to capture the ring bearer if you’re evil, or traverse the ring bearer to Mount Doom if you’re good.

Gaming Time: 2-3 hours

Middle Earth Rules

This rule set is designed to be used with any Middle Earth fantasy miniatures, but especially The Lord of the Rings range from Games Workshop.

The rules are versatile and fast, allowing for skirmish actions or larger set piece battles like Helms Deep.  The hero’s of the book are exactly that, they are hard to take down and most can command a substantial number of troops that help protect them.

Mathematical addition is used to work out the attack values, just add the numbers from the back of your figures base, great to improve the maths skills of younger players, whilst having lots of fun at the same time.
